Val Ann Henry (AKA “Tootsie”), age 53, passed away on May 21, 2017 in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was born on August 13, 1963 in San Carlos, Arizona.
She was raised in San Carlos and lived there for most of her life. She went to elementary school in San Carlos, graduated from Globe High in 1981, and attended college at the American Indian Bible College in Phoenix, Arizona for two years, then transferred to Northcentral University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During high school Val was a seasoned basketball player for the Globe High Lady Tigers. After high school and college, she continued to play basketball in league games and tournaments. Basketball was a sport she was passionate about.
Val was also well known and recognized for her talent in the art of Apache burden basket weaving. She won awards and ribbons for her weaving talent and her work is displayed in museums, trading posts and homes across the country today. Val was also a fulltime mother to her two children, Evan and Tori, who she considered her “pride and joy.”
Val loved to laugh and joke around with friends, she had a contagious smile and a warm, big heart. She leaves a void in many hearts, especially within her children.
Val is survived by her two children, Evan Ray and Victoria Josephine Volante, her mother Evelyn Henry, sisters Velma (Daniel) Billy, Carol (John) Salazar, Mary Jane (Dennis) Dudley, and Velda Williams, her brothers Jackson (Melissa) Henry Sr, Jason (Barbara) Henry, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father, Jackson Henry Sr, and nephew, David Justin Jackson Dudley.
The wake is scheduled for Friday, May 26th at 5pm at the Henry residence in Lower Peridot and the funeral is scheduled for Saturday, May 27th at 1:30pm at the Assembly of God Church in Gilson Wash.
The Henry family greatly appreciates all the help and donations contributed during this time of sorrow and grief.
